Sophie Turner, much like most Game of Thrones fans, thought that the series would end very differently. Although she thinks that her character Sansa Stark ultimately got exactly what she deserved — Cersei Lannister may have gotten off too easily.
Games of Thrones has one of the most controversial endings of a top-rated show of all time that ended up disappointing many die-hard fans. Other than the heartbreaking fate of Daenerys Targaryen shocking most viewers, the death of Cersei was lackluster.
Sophie spoke to The Wrap about what she thought would happen.
‘I thought Arya (Stark) would kill Cersei. And I would like to have seen Sansa and Cersei reunited, or Arya and Cersei. But there were so many ways the story could have turned out. I felt very passionately about the ending for Sansa, and I was very happy with the ending that turned out for her.’
Turner was one of the first stars to defend the creators of the show against the petition (that amassed over a million signatures) to rewrite the last season.
Joe Jonas’ wife told the NY Times: ‘Honestly, I’m not surprised. People always have an idea in their heads of how they want a show to finish, and so when it doesn’t go to their liking, they start to speak up about it and rebel. The thing about Game of Thrones that’s always been amazing is the fact that there’s always been crazy twists and turns, right from Season 1 with Ned’s beheading. So Daenerys becoming something of the Mad Queen — it shouldn’t be such a negative thing for fans. It’s a shock for sure, but I think it’s just because it hasn’t gone their way.’
She also went on to say that the notion was ‘disrespectful’ to everyone who worked tirelessly to create the ending.
