In the last few days, Iggy Azalea dropped her brand new EP, titled Wicked Lips. It was initially planned to be a re-issue of her incredible second studio album In My Defense, but she changed her mind since the direction of the tracks went down a different path opposed to her sophomore album, and we have to admit that this was totally the right decision. The EP release follows up lead single “Lola” which was a collaboration with Alice Chater, as well as Iggy Azalea’s feature on Brooke Candy’s album track “Cum”.
Iggy Azalea, real name Amethyst Kelly, is an Australian hip-hop artist, who really started at the bottom and has now really earned her place in the rap music industry and she continues to prove herself time and time again. She’s had a bunch of various hits, namely “Fancy” featuring Charli XCX, “Black Widow” featuring Rita Ora, as well as featuring on Ariana Grande’s “Problem”. She’s one of these acts that keep us all guessing, unsure of which path she’s following, and so she creates her own path when it comes to music. She is now an independent artist, releasing the music she wants. She finally released her sophomore album In My Defense, which spawned the singles, “Sally Walker”, “Started”, instant grat single “Just Wanna“, and “F**k It Up” featuring Kash Doll. The album is totally epic, but that is no surprise since she had originally planned to drop Digital Distortion as her second studio album, but it got cancelled – so the five-year wait was totally worth it. Now we’ve got her new EP, Wicked Lips, and it really is a different path stylistically and musically compared to this year’s album, but we are loving it nonetheless.
The EP contains a total of four tracks, with her enlisting Alice Chater and Pabllo Vittar for collaborations, with Carl Falk and J. White Did It acting as producers. Each track deserves its own spotlight so we thought we’d do a track-by-track review.
Lola (with Alice Chater)
Written by Alice Chater, Amanda Cygnaeus, Amethyst Kelly, Drew Gavin, Dhani Lennevald, and Kee Ingrosso / Produced by Carl Falk.
Sampling “Mambo Italiano” originally sung by Rosemary Clooney and the Mellomen, “Lola” is a fresh take on the track, one that easily gets stuck in our heads. As mentioned in our previous article, the song and the music video plays with duality, bipolar, and different personalities. Both artists bring it with their vocals and it’s not a surprise that it was chosen as the lead single from the EP.
Not Important

We love an Iggy Azalea solo and she sure does not disappoint, “Not Important” is a fierce strength track with her calling out this guy who came on to her by talking about being rich but she knows he’s lying. There’s a few name-drops in this, with comedian and actor Damon Wayans (In Living Color, My Wife and Kids, Lethal Weapon (TV Series)) being mentioned at the very start, she also mentions the Grease character Sandra Dee, as well as Jaime Lee Curtis (Halloween franchise, Freaky Friday, Scream Queens) in a line about telling true lies which is a reference to the film that the actress starred in, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, titled True Lies. Iggy Azalea impresses with her lyrical content and that chorus will certainly make you play the song a second time.
The Girls (with Pabllo Vittar)

Now, this sounds more like a mixtape track, almost as if Iggy Azalea has come across a Pabllo Vittar track and changed the verses – and we are living for it, especially since it’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything similar from Iggy Azalea. The chorus and post-chorus are sung by Pabllo Vittar, focusing on how difficult it is for women in today’s society, even now, and that they need to be better and kinder to each other, showing love and not hate, and the world could change for the better in doing so; whereas, Iggy Azalea completely contrasts that with her verses calling out people who hate on her. Her first verse focuses inwards and how she’s on top and don’t need to bring others down to get attention but she will correct you if you aren’t telling the truth – we know this is the truth thanks to Twitter if you’re not following her, we highly suggest you do and make sure the notifications are on as she does like to delete. The second verse establishes what she said in the first, giving out truths, feelings, and realness; whilst the bridge at the end has her telling girls to go and live their lives. This is definitely our favourite track on the EP – oh how we wish there was a music video!
Personal Problem

What a way to end this EP, Iggy Azalea is a strong female rapper and she’s not afraid of anything. She’s totally ready to clap-back when she needs to and that is exactly what she is saying on this track. “Personal Problem” delves in deep against someone who clearly has a vendetta against her and she sure doesn’t hold back. We are living for every single second of this song.
Overall, Iggy Azalea’s Wicked Lips EP is an unforgettable four-track collection that really is the perfect side-project. She’s fierce, unapologetic, and on top-form throughout – this is totally why she’s doing so well for herself, and now that she’s independent it’s clear she’s not going to stop releasing new music and we cannot wait to see what is next! As an independent artist, she has really thrived this year and will continue to do so in the coming years. We also have to mention this awesome cover art, she’s serving in every way, giving us an insight into Snow White what with the poisoned apple – Snow White and the magic mirror is referenced in “The Girls” as she claims that the mirror tells her that Iggy Azalea is the finest of them all, and with that cover we’re not surprised!
